Music: Green Tea – Beautiful Weirdo
![]()
While the ‘Beautiful Weirdo Mixtape‘ marks Green Tea’s first appearance on my music radar, she has been on the build for a while opening for acts like Slick Rick, Kindred the Family Soul, Dead Prez, Chuck Brown, Fertile Ground and Anthony David. She has already put out two LPs ‘Have A Cup Of Green Tea Dosage 1: Shades of Green‘ and ‘Dosage II: Choices‘, efforts I will be exploring off of the back of ‘Beautiful Weido‘.
On first listen two aspects of the music stood out; first GT’s smooth, ambient vocal at times carrying hints of Jill Scott while remaining undoubtedly her own. Second was the use of Outkast samples, on the opening track Here I Am, Rose Coloured Glasses and most notably on Superman. The later uses Andre 3000’s Prototype to devastating effect. Prototype is one of my all time favourite tracks and Green Tea more than does it justice, paying tribute to that kind of love we are all looking for: ‘I think I’m in love with superman…’ It is a track that will be getting heavy iPod rotation in the near future.
The other standout track for me was the title joint ‘Beautiful Weirdo’ featuring Dri Fish from The 5th L. If you are not familiar with The 5th L get to know right here. A guttural, heartfelt expression of loneliness and self realisation the track is in short beautiful. Music’s great power is to connect people through common experience, in times like these this track is both relevant and uplifting. I would advise you to buy this album off the back of these track alone, but the whole of the project deserves your attention.
